NCLEX Exam Dates

Short answer

Your NCLEX exam date is the one you select yourself through Pearson VUE, once your board of nursing has cleared you and issued an Authorization to Test. There is no fixed national test day. You choose from available slots at a nearby test centre, usually within 24-48 hours after receiving your ATT, and can reschedule if your plans change.

What this kind of practice is for

The NCLEX doesn't run on a calendar the way a school exam does. There's no spring sitting or autumn sitting. Once your nursing programme confirms your graduation and your board of nursing processes your application, Pearson VUE issues an Authorization to Test (ATT), and from that point the date is yours to pick.

This matters because candidates often go looking for a schedule that doesn't exist. What actually exists is a booking window. Your ATT has an expiry date, typically 90 days from issue, and within that window you choose a day, time, and test centre that suits you. Miss the window and you have to reapply and pay the registration fee again.

How to use it without wasting time

Book as soon as your ATT lands. Popular test centres, especially in large metro areas, fill their nearer slots first, and waiting even a week can push you two or three weeks out. Log into your Pearson VUE account, enter your ATT details, and pick from the calendar of open slots at centres within your search radius.

If you need a specific date for a job start date or visa reason, search multiple centres rather than one. Widening your radius by even 30-50 miles often opens up dates a fortnight earlier. Avoid booking right at the end of your ATT window as your only option — if something forces a reschedule, you want room to move without the ATT expiring on you.

What a good session looks like

A well-planned test date sits far enough after your ATT arrives that you've had a full, deliberate review period, but not so far out that momentum from your programme has faded. Most candidates do best sitting within three to six weeks of graduation, while content is still fresh and CAT-style question practice is recent.

Confirm your ID matches your ATT exactly, down to the middle name or its absence, well before test day. A mismatch at check-in can turn away a candidate who did everything else right, and that's a wasted slot with a new registration fee attached.

Reading your results honestly

If your preferred date disappears when you go to book, that's a sign to check back rather than panic — Pearson VUE releases new openings as other candidates reschedule or cancel. Set a reminder to check every few days rather than obsessively refreshing.

Track your ATT expiry date somewhere visible. Candidates who let it lapse without testing have to restart the registration and eligibility process with their board, which can add weeks. If your circumstances change and you won't make your booked date, reschedule at least 24 hours in advance through Pearson VUE rather than simply not showing up, which forfeits your fee entirely.

Common questions

How long after I graduate can I book my NCLEX date?

As soon as your school submits final grades to the board of nursing and your ATT is issued, which is typically one to a few weeks after graduation depending on your board's processing speed. You can then book any available slot within your 90-day ATT window.

Can I choose any test centre or do I have to use one near my school?

You can test at any Pearson VUE centre that offers the NCLEX, regardless of where you studied or live. Many candidates travel to a different city or state if it means testing sooner.

What happens if my ATT expires before I test?

You lose that authorization and must reapply through your board of nursing, including paying the registration fee again. Boards generally won't extend an expired ATT, so treat the expiry date as a hard deadline.

Can I reschedule my NCLEX date after booking it?

Yes, through Pearson VUE, provided you do it at least 24 hours before your scheduled appointment. Rescheduling inside that 24-hour window, or not showing up, forfeits your exam fee and requires a new registration.
