Pearson Vue Register for NCLEX

The rule as it stands

You cannot register for the NCLEX with Pearson VUE on your own initiative. Your board of nursing controls eligibility and sends your candidate record to Pearson VUE first; the Pearson VUE registration screen simply will not accept payment until that transfer has happened.

Once eligible, you have a defined window to complete registration and testing, generally tied to the Authorization to Test's expiration, commonly 90 days from issue. Boards set their own eligibility periods and some require reapplication if the window lapses, so this is not uniform across states or countries.

How the process actually works

After your board notifies Pearson VUE of your eligibility, go to the Pearson VUE NCLEX candidate website and create an account using the same name and details as your board application. Pay the exam fee by credit or debit card. Pearson VUE then issues the Authorization to Test by email, usually within a day or two.

The ATT email contains your candidate identification number and authorization number, both required to schedule. Log back into the Pearson VUE scheduling portal, enter those numbers, and choose a test center and appointment time. Confirm the appointment details against your ATT before leaving the page, since a mismatched center or date is your responsibility to fix, not Pearson VUE's.

What trips people up

Candidates often try to register with Pearson VUE before applying to their board, then wonder why the system rejects payment or shows no record of them. The board application always comes first; Pearson VUE registration is the second step, not a substitute for it.

Name mismatches between your ID, your board application, and your Pearson VUE account cause turnaways at the test center, even when the difference is a missing middle initial or a maiden name still on file. International candidates sometimes underestimate the additional international scheduling fee, which is separate from the standard exam fee and charged directly by Pearson VUE. Waiting too long after receiving the ATT to book, especially near graduation season when centers fill fast, is another frequent problem.

What to do if it goes wrong

If registration is rejected, confirm with your board of nursing that your eligibility has actually been transmitted to Pearson VUE; this can take a few business days after the board approves your application. Do not keep attempting payment in the meantime.

If your ATT lapses before you test, you must go back to your board of nursing for a new eligibility period, then pay the Pearson VUE fee again once a fresh ATT is issued. For appointment changes, reschedule through Pearson VUE more than 24 hours ahead to avoid losing the fee entirely, and call Pearson VUE candidate services if a name discrepancy needs flagging before test day.
