Short answer

You schedule your NCLEX through the Pearson VUE website or by phone once your Authorization to Test (ATT) arrives from your nursing regulatory body. You cannot book before the ATT exists in Pearson VUE's system, and you must test within the ATT's validity window, usually 90 days. Missing that window means paying the exam fee again.

The rule as it stands

Your board of nursing or nursing regulatory body sends your eligibility to Pearson VUE only after it has your application, transcripts and fees. Pearson VUE then issues an ATT, either by email or through your Pearson VUE account. The ATT carries an expiry date, typically 90 days from issue, though some boards set a different window. You must sit the exam before that date passes.

You cannot book a testing appointment without a live ATT. If you try, the system will not find you in the eligible pool, regardless of how much you have paid or completed elsewhere. The ATT is the single gatekeeper, and its timing is set by your board, not by Pearson VUE.

How the process actually works

Once the ATT lands, log into your Pearson VUE account, select NCLEX-RN or NCLEX-PN, and choose a test centre and slot. Centres near population hubs fill quickly, so check availability as soon as the ATT arrives rather than waiting. You will need a form of identification that matches the name on your ATT exactly, including middle names, so check this against your ID before you book.

Payment for the exam fee happens at booking unless your board has already collected it. Confirmation arrives by email with the date, time and centre address. Bring two forms of ID and arrive early; centres will turn away candidates who miss the check-in window, and that counts as a missed appointment, not a reschedule.

What trips people up

The most common error is a name mismatch between the ATT, the application and the ID presented at the centre. Married names, hyphenation and middle names cause more rejected check-ins than anything else. Fix any discrepancy with your board before the test date, not at the door.

The second is letting the ATT lapse. Candidates sometimes wait to feel ready, and the 90-day window closes while they study. If it lapses, you reapply and pay the exam fee again; the earlier fee is not refunded or carried over. Rescheduling within the window is free if done more than 24 hours before the slot, but a late change or no-show forfeits the fee entirely.

What to do if it goes wrong

If your ATT expires, contact your board of nursing to request a new one; you will need to pay the exam fee again, and processing can take a few weeks depending on the board. If a name mismatch is caught before test day, correct it with your board and update Pearson VUE, since the two systems must agree.

If a technical problem occurs at the centre, an unresponsive system, a fire alarm, staff will document it and Pearson VUE will follow up on rescheduling at no charge. Keep any confirmation emails and incident paperwork from the centre in case you need to dispute a no-show charge later.
