The rule as it stands

Registration with Pearson VUE is a separate step from applying to your board of nursing. The board (or the state's designated licensing authority) must first approve your eligibility and pass your details to Pearson VUE. Only then can you create a Pearson VUE account, pay the exam fee, and receive an Authorization to Test, known as the ATT.

The ATT carries an expiration date, usually 90 days from issue, though this varies by board. You must test and have your exam appointment completed within that window. Missing it means paying the exam fee again and, in some cases, reapplying to the board before a new ATT is issued.

How the process actually works

Once your board declares you eligible, Pearson VUE sends instructions to the email address on file. You register on the Pearson VUE website, confirm your name matches your government-issued ID exactly, and pay the exam fee, currently $200 for the NCLEX-RN candidates in most jurisdictions, with additional fees for candidates testing outside the country of their nursing education.

After payment, you wait for the ATT email, which contains your candidate identification number and authorization number. With both in hand, you schedule your test date and location through the Pearson VUE scheduling portal, choosing from available test centers. Appointments fill quickly around graduation season, so check availability before committing to a target date.

What trips people up

The most common error is a name mismatch. If your ID shows a middle name, a hyphenated surname, or a recent legal name change that your board application does not reflect exactly, Pearson VUE can turn you away at the test center on exam day. Fix any discrepancy with your board before registering, not after.

The second common error is scheduling too close to the ATT expiration date, then losing the slot to illness, a scheduling conflict, or a full test center. Rescheduling within 24 hours of your original appointment forfeits the fee. A less obvious trap: some candidates assume registering with Pearson VUE and applying to the board are the same action and skip the board application, which leaves them unable to register at all.

What to do if it goes wrong

If your ATT expires before you test, contact your board of nursing, not Pearson VUE, since only the board can authorize a new eligibility period. You will typically need to pay the NCLEX fee again through Pearson VUE once the new ATT arrives.

If you need to reschedule, do it more than 24 hours before your appointment through the Pearson VUE website or by phone, to avoid forfeiting the fee. If a name or ID issue surfaces close to test day, call Pearson VUE candidate services directly. They can sometimes flag the discrepancy in advance so you are not turned away at the center, though the underlying record still needs correcting with your board.
