Short answer
Nursys nurse license verification is a free, real-time lookup run by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) that confirms whether a nurse's RN or LPN/VN licence is active, expired, or under disciplinary action. Most employers and boards use it as their first check, but it only covers states that report data to it.
Answering it directly
Nursys is the national licensure database built and maintained by NCSBN. Its public-facing tool, Nursys QuickConfirm, lets anyone search by a nurse's name and state to see licence type, status, expiration date, and whether any public disciplinary action is on file. It is free, does not require the nurse's permission, and updates as boards submit data, which for most participating states is daily or near real time.
A second layer, Nursys e-Notify, is a paid subscription employers and agencies use to get automatic alerts when a licence they've registered changes status, for example if it lapses or is disciplined. A nurse holding a multistate licence under the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) will show as verified in every compact state through the same record, because the home-state board is the authority of record.
Why the answer is what it is
Licensing in the US is a state function. Each board of nursing issues and disciplines its own licences under its own statute, and Nursys exists to pull that scattered data into one searchable place rather than to replace any single board's authority. That is why a Nursys result is only as current and complete as what the issuing board has submitted, and why the system's answer is always framed as 'what Nursys shows,' not a legal guarantee of licence status.
The compact structure explains the multistate behaviour. Under the NLC, a nurse's home state issues one licence valid to practise in every other compact state, so Nursys reflects a single record rather than a separate one per state. Non-compact states still report into Nursys but each licence there is single-state only, which is why the same nurse can look 'verified' in one state and 'not found' in another.
Exceptions and edge cases
Not every board participates in Nursys, and a handful of states or territories report with a lag rather than in real time, so a licence that changed status this week may not show the change immediately. Newly issued licences can also take a few days to appear after the board processes them, which catches out recent graduates checking their own record straight after passing NCLEX.
Name changes are a common mismatch: Nursys searches on the name the board has on file, so a nurse who married or changed names without updating the board will return no result under their current name. Advanced practice credentials, certifications, and endorsements are generally not shown on the basic QuickConfirm record, and discipline that is pending or under appeal may not appear until it is finalised. When the online result looks wrong or incomplete, the issuing board's own licence lookup is the authoritative fallback, not Nursys.
What to do next
To check a licence, go to nursys.com and use QuickConfirm with the nurse's name and the state of licensure; no login or fee is required. Employers or agencies verifying licences in bulk, or wanting to be alerted automatically to status changes, should set up a Nursys e-Notify account instead of repeating manual searches.
If a search returns no result or the details look outdated, contact the state board of nursing directly rather than assuming the licence is invalid. Nurses checking their own record should confirm the name on file matches their current legal name, and should allow a few business days after any renewal, endorsement, or exam pass before expecting Nursys to reflect it.

Is Nursys license verification free?
QuickConfirm, the public lookup tool, is free and requires no account. Nursys e-Notify, the subscription service employers use for automatic status alerts, does carry a fee.
Does Nursys show disciplinary action?
Public disciplinary actions reported by a participating board are shown on the licence record. Actions that are pending, sealed, or from a non-participating board may not appear.
How current is the information on Nursys?
Most boards update Nursys daily, but a few report with a delay, so a very recent renewal, lapse, or disciplinary action may not show immediately.
Do all US states report to Nursys?
No. The large majority of boards participate, but a small number do not report into the system, so a licence from a non-participating state won't appear on QuickConfirm at all.
Can Nursys verify a multistate compact license?
Yes. Under the Nurse Licensure Compact, one record from the home state's board shows the licence as valid across every other compact state, since a compact licence isn't reissued state by state.
