The NCLEX for Indian nurses

Short answer
An Indian-trained nurse with a GNM or BSc Nursing qualification sits the same NCLEX as everyone else. The work is in the approval: a credentials evaluation of your programme, verification from your State Nursing Council and the Indian Nursing Council, English proficiency where the board requires it, and then an Authorization to Test from Pearson VUE. Test centres operate in India.
GNM, BSc, and what boards do with each
A four-year BSc Nursing is generally evaluated as comparable to a US bachelor's-level programme and is the smoothest route. A GNM diploma is assessed on its content rather than its name, and outcomes vary by board — some accept it, some find deficiencies in specific clinical areas, and some will not consider it at all.
If you hold a GNM, that single question decides which state you should apply to, and it should be settled before you spend anything. Read the board's own page and, if it is ambiguous, ask the board in writing and keep the reply.
Verification from two councils
Most evaluations need your State Nursing Council registration verified and, depending on the report, confirmation involving the Indian Nursing Council, plus transcripts direct from your college. All three move at their own pace, and none of them are quick.
Start them the day you choose a state. Send the exact form the service asks for, follow up in writing, and keep copies. Candidates who begin these after finishing their study plan routinely wait months with nothing to do but stay revised.
What is different about the questions
The clinical content will be familiar. What will not be is delegation and scope — which tasks an RN can hand to unlicensed assistive personnel, and where the line sits between an RN and an LPN — because the American staffing model is not the Indian one and the correct answer follows the American model.
Two more habits to unlearn: acting competently within your own judgement where the credited answer is to notify the provider, and involving the family where the credited answer is to ask the client. Neither reflects worse nursing. They are jurisdiction, and thirty practice items with rationales fix them.

Common questions
Can I take the NCLEX in India?
Yes. Pearson VUE runs international NCLEX centres in India. The exam and result are identical to sitting it in the US, with an international scheduling surcharge, and the licence comes from your chosen state board.
Is a GNM diploma enough for the NCLEX?
It depends entirely on the board of nursing and on the clinical hours in your programme. Some accept it, some find deficiencies, some do not consider it. Confirm with the specific board before ordering an evaluation.
Do Indian nurses need IELTS for the NCLEX?
Many boards require an English test; a few waive it for English-medium programmes. VisaScreen generally requires one regardless, so plan for it if you intend to work in the US.
